Come on in and sit a spell . . . .

The main goal of Ranching School of Hard Knocks is to bring people who have paid their dues together with people who are wanting to learn new ideas so the same lessons are not repeated over and over.

I was blessed with growing up with some real deal “Hard Knockers.” At the time I thought they were just tight, old, mean devils.

One mentor, O.B. Burtis, said, “To learn how to make money in the cattle business you have to go broke.” If you would ask O.B. how many times he had been broke, he would say, “The bank only knew about it once.”

To me the three main points that have been lost in ranching are:

• Making a profit
• Considering this is an industry that only needs sunshine and a little rain, it has become a food production system that takes more calories than it yields
• Giving young people no hope to ranch

I’m excited the most that the people who are ranching profitably are the people who will be sharing their wisdom at these Ranching School of Hard Knocks schools.

When Walt Davis and I started talking about these schools, our main goal was to be happy and have fun at what we do.

And so we will!
